Former Sports Minister Dr Rashid Pelpuo has bemoaned the lack of attention given to boxing in the country.
The former amateur boxer and the lawmaker, speaking to Class Sports, noted that boxing had the tendency to win Ghana more laurels at the international level and, therefore, called on authorities pay attention to the sport.
“Boxing is a sport that has [taken] Ghana very far but for some reason we have not given it the needed attention in recent times. You would realise boxers through their own efforts have been able to hit the jackpot, but there has not been much from authorities. I believe we can do better,” he told Class Sports’ Hussein Hassan.
The Wa Central Member of Parliament called on the incoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to give greater attention to boxing to ensure Ghana does better at the next Olympic Games.
“I hope the next government will place more emphasis on the sport to ensure we do better in the next Olympics. Ever since Ghana started participating at the Olympics, boxing has always served us well. I hope we are able to churn out more world champions soon,” he noted.
