Ghana legend Wilberforce Mfum has questioned the stature of Rev. Osei Kofi, rejecting constant claims by the ex-Kotoko star he’s the best ever player to have emerged from the West African nation as ‘comical’.
In a damning assessment of the self-acclaimed ‘greatest footballer’, the hard-hitting Mfum claimed Osei Kofi was a ‘kid’ who failed woefully during his time at Hearts of Oak and was only revived when he cross-carpet to join rivals Asante Kotoko.
The debate about the greatest footballer in the history of Ghanaian football has been raging all day as Happy Sports “Greatest Footballer” series kicked-in on Wednesday as the country marks 60-year Independence anniversary.
Now a reverend minister, Osei Kofi has boasted severally that he’s the most gifted player to have emerged from the West African nation, brushing aside the achievements of players like Abedi Pele, Abdul Razak, Baba Yara, CK Gyamfi, Aggre Fynn amongst others.
But Wilberforce Mfum, who enjoyed a successful spell with Kotoko and the Black Stars, has moved to put the debate in his perspective, insisting Reverend Osei Kofi does not match his claims.
“There are many great footballers who have come through for Ghana. And the truth is that Osei Kofi was a kid whom I picked from Hearts to join Kotoko after struggling in Accra,” he told Accra-based Happy FM
“When we are mentioning greatest Ghanaian players, he does not feature in the list at all. “He is far from behind those who made the game thick.
“The likes of Baba Yara, CK Gyamfi, James Agyei should be up there not Osei Kofi. Ask anybody from our generation and he will tell you James Agyei is the greatest ever. He was the relatively shy type and so never enjoyed media hype. But he was the real deal and will vote for him as the greatest on any day.”
Mfum’s damning verdict on Osei Kofi could ruffle feathers as the triple Olympian has constantly touted his credentials in the media space.
