In the ongoing 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Ghana’s Razak Abugiri has won the bronze medal for Judo in the 60kg weight class. He beat Mozambique’s Neuso Sigauque to claim Ghana’s first medal at the games. Ghana is now ranked 9th in the overall standings at the games.
Razak Abugiri’s win is sure to bring a sigh of relief to Ghana’s Sports Ministry, which has come under heavy criticism for its bungling of Ghana’s appearance in the recently ended 2014 World Cup Tournament in Brazil.
Several animadversions have been made against the Sports Ministry about its prioritization of its commitments to Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars to the detriment of other sports.
In the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Ghana only won 1 silver and two bronze medals. It is hoped that the victory in Judo, will serves as the beginning of several more victories for Ghana’s athletes during the 10 day tournament.
