Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has lamented on the lack of recognition the country provides to its retired sportsmen.
Just about three years, Ghana has lost six of its great sports heroes with the latest being ex-Black Stars coach Fred Osam Duodu, Sam Ardey and Emmanuel Afranie.
Addressing the August House on Wednesday, member of Parliament for Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye warned the nation about losing more of its sports heroes if attention is not accorded to them.
“We need to take care of the welfare of our senior colleagues and national heroes”
“As we are talking today, I will not be surprised, God forbid if the minister comes back tomorrow to tell us that we’ve lost another because the situation of Alhaji Doodo Ankrah,John Eshun,Amadu Akuse, Kwesi Owusu and others are not situations that we need to be enthused about”
“Sometimes to take care of their medical bills is a problem” he added.
Nii Lante’s sentiments were echoed by the newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister, Hon. Isaac Asiamah.
Fred Osam Duodu will be laid to rest on Saturday, 25th February at Agona Swedru in the Central region whiles Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie goes home on the same day at Bonwire in the Ashanti region.
