Mzonke Fana of South Africa arrived in Accra late Wednesday night for his IBO Lightweight world championship fight against Ghana’s Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe in a buoyant mood, declaring his readiness to silence the home favourite on fight night tomorrow.
The former 2-time IBF Junior Lightweight champion of the world says he will not be intimidated by the expected massive support Tagoe will receive at the new Bukom Boxing Arena in the Ghanaian capital on Friday night.
“I have fought all over the world against top boxers, I have been in there with world champions and I’ve been world champion twice so I’m never afraid of any opponent. I am here to win and nothing will stop me from winning this title,” Fana told Ghanaian journalists way past midnight at the Kotoka International Airport.
When asked what he has to say about Tagoe’s apparent promise that the fight will not last beyond six rounds, last minute replacement Fana minced no words with his response insisting the ring will decide come the night of December 2, 2016.
“Well, he can say what he like, I can’t do nothing about that. What I know I can do is to discipline him when the bell sounds and I’m all alone in the ring with him. I have faced wars before, so I am ever ready for any battle,” the South African said full of confidence.
“Obviously I took this fight at a very short notice but I fight regularly and was in a world title fight (WBO Lightweight title loss to Terry Flanagan) only some 5 months ago so I am always ready. I’m taking this title with me to South Africa,” Fana added.
Tagoe versus Fana headlines the BabyJet Promotions bill at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Friday which will be spiced up with other crack fights featuring the likes of WBO Africa Super Middleweight champ, Obodai Sai, Felix Williams among others.
The night is also set to witness musical performances by top Ghanaian acts Stonebwoy, Becca, Tinny Aletse, Wisa and many others. Rates are going at Gh¢150 for VIP ringside, Gh¢50 for regular entrance and Gh¢50 for Bukom special and students.
