Former Black stars skipper, Abedi “Pele” Ayew, says Black stars coach, James Kwasi Appiah needs the support of everyone to succeed at the job on his second coming.
While Abedi Pele, has no doubt that Appiah will succeed on his comeback because of the experience gained, he believes, the collective support of stakeholders in the game, would be more beneficial.
Abedi Pele explained that Coach Appiah could not have been considered for a second term if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was not convinced he had improved to lead the team again.
“For him to return to the job is not just a confident effort, but it is significant of how well he has improved to even be considered, I have no doubt that he will succeed, but how well he succeeds will to a large extent depend on the support he gets from the GFA as well as other stakeholders like you and I.
“Yes we can help him succeed if we offer constructive criticisms but not just to hurl insults as we saw happening during his first term,” Abedi Pele told the Graphic Sports.
In the estimation of the former African Footballer of the Year, whose two sons are currently with the Black Stars, the past experience at the same post to serve as a guide and thus also help Appiah who assumes his new role on May 1, to be more successful in his comeback .
According to Abedi Pele, Appiah’s ‘second coming’ to the Stars job also meant he had vastly improved on his technical abilities to be considered for the job ahead of the other applicants.
“For them to give him a second chance is indicative of the fact that he has improved on his technical capabilities and once the GFA made that bold step, it means he deserves it.”
Very few people know Appiah’s capabilities better than three-time African
best footballer Abedi, who together with the former Asante Kotoko fullback were the youngest members of the Black Stars squad that won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 1982 Nations Cup in Libya and both played for the Stars during AFCON 1992 in Senegal.
