Bayern Munich’s German international defender Jerome Boateng will be sidelined for a number of weeks after needing a shoulder operation, Kicker magazine reported on its website.
Asked if surgery was necessary, the 28-year-old Boateng told Kicker: “Unfortunately, yes.”
Boateng born to a Ghnaian parent, suffered the injury in a training ground fall, missed the start of the season after tearing a thigh muscle on international duty with Germany at Euro 2016.
Kicker reports Boateng is set to undergo shoulder surgery following a training injury that has plagued him for the last several weeks. The centerback himself confirmed the injury.
Carlo Ancelotti announced that Boateng would be unavailable this weekend due to this injury at his press conference today. The club has made no formal statement on Boateng’s condition yet and likely won’t until after a full evaluation.
The loss of Boateng sends Bayern Munich into something of a mini-crisis. Javi Martinez is currently carrying another minor injury while Mats Hummels has also been plagued by a similar run of injuries this season.
To boot Holger Badstuber’s perpetual injury woes have continued this season and he’s now been completely absent from the team sheet since his 90-minute appearance in Bayern’s loss to FC Rostov in November.
This maze of injuries leaves David Alaba as the lone consistent option at center back for the remainder of the Hinrunde.
Luckily, there’s just two matchdays left. Unluckily, next Wednesday is a table-topping encounter with RB Leipzig and a match Bayern Munich can not afford to lose.
