The government of Ghana has revealed plans to revamp the redundant Winneba Sports college and transform it into a Centre of Excellence
This move by the government was made public by the Minister of Finance, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta whiles reading the 2017 budget
The National Sports College was established by the erstwhile PNDC government in 1984 to serve a training hub for the country’s technical and human resource in the Sports fraternity but constant neglect by successive governments has made the institution lose its relevance to the development of sporting talents in the country
However the Nana Addo led government have promised to revamp the college and make it live up to the true meaning of its creation
The Minister of Finance hinted that restructuring of the institution will be done through Public Private Partnership (PPP)
The minister also revealed that the government is committed to resurrecting inter-schools sports that once fed the nation with great sporting talents.
“In the area of sports development feasibility studies will be completed to facilitate the expansion of the infrastructure stock and transform the National Sports College into a Centre of Excellence, through Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements. Additional efforts will be made to support other disciplines starting from our school”.
