Captain of the Ghana Senior Men’s National Team and Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan has made it to the Goal 50 that was released on Monday afternoon.
This makes the Ghana captain the first Ghanaian to ink his name in the exclusive list of outstanding footballers since its inception six years ago. The Goal 50 is a prestigious, annual award that recognizes and ranks the world’s 50 best footballers of the season.
Cristiano Ronaldo was adjudged the overall winner for the 2014 edition of the Goal 50. Gyan, who ranked ahead of the likes of Juventus ace Paul Pogba (38) and Dutchman Robin van Persie (41) in 35th place, did not fail to note the significance of the award, insisting it would prove ‘a spur’ in his quest to attain even greater heights.
The former Sunderland forward had a wonderful 2013-14 season at club level helping the UAE-side Al Ain win the President Cup, scoring in every round of the knockout tournament as well as a crucial goal in the final.
The 28-year-old was the top goal scorer in the UAE Pro-League for the third consecutive time, scoring 29 goals in 26 games.
