A Ghanaian professional basketball star in the National Basketball Association (NBA) will conduct two separate clinics for young players in Accra and Takoradi and Accra today and next week at the Takoradi Technical University and the University of Ghana courts respectively.
Ben Bentil, who plays for Boston Celtic in the NBA, is in the country to promote basketball through his NGO named Bentil Skills Camp, by providing the youth aged between 14 and 21 with elite training and modern techniques in the sport.
Briefing the media yesterday at the premises of the University of Ghana in Accra, Bentil said the purpose of the two clinics was to give back to society r the Boston Celtic in the National Basketball Association (NBA) said the purpose for the two events was in fulfilment of a desire to give back to society.
“It has always been my dream to come home and help other kids who have aspirations like me to realise their dreams. Playing out there is a blessing that everybody would love to experience”.
“There’s a lot of opportunities out there so I came back to help the kids get the same opportunity that I have today”, he added.
For his part, vice president of the Ghana Basketball Association, Mr Iddrisu Gamel, expressed the association’s appreciation to the organisers and sponsors of the clinic and called on other philanthropists to emulate the gesture.
“I am so excited to see one of our own coming back to the society. I think we should have a lot of such clinics for the benefit of our young people and for the development of the game in Ghana,” he said.
Mr Gideon Kodo, events and PR manager of Promasidor Ghana Limited, one of the sponsors for the clinic, noted that his company deemed it necessary to invest in lesser known sports as the nation’s focus was always shifted to football.
The two events are being supported by Decathlon, Belaqua Mineral Water, Twitchouse, OSB Legon and Basketball Nation.
