Ghana has been ranked the 25th best team following the conclusion of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Ghana just got a single point when they were eliminated from the group stages.
FIFA released the ranking after the closing game of 20th edition of the tournament which saw Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift her fourth title at the FIFA flagship event.
The Black Stars lost 2-1 to the USA in her opening group fixture, drew 2-2 with eventual winners Germany and lost 2-1 to Portugal in her last game before bowing out of the competition at the end of the group stage.
The 2014 ranking marks a lackluster tournament for the Black Stars who ranked 7th at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after succumbing to Uruguay in the quarter-finals on penalties.
The Black Stars are the 2nd least ranked team among the five African representatives, seven places above Cameroon who sit at the lowest position among all 32 teams at the tournament. Algeria (14th) is the highest ranked African side with 4 points, same points as Nigeria (16th) who sit two places down while Cote d’Ivoire (21st) is the third highest ranked African side with 3 points.
Ghana’s group opponents and world champions, Germany, sit at the summit of the table with 19 points, one point above losing finalists Argentina, while the USA and Portugal occupy the 15th and the 18th positions respectively.
