Former President of Ghana John Agyekum Kufuor believes the Black Stars can make it to the Russia 2018 World Cup only if they learn to bond as a team throughout the qualifiers.
Ghana’s qualifying campaign got off to the poorest possible start after the Black Stars could only record a 0-0 draw at home against the Cranes of Uganda.
The next match in the series against the Pharoah’s of Egypt promises to be a tricky tie for Ghana following the 2-1 away victory recorded by the Egyptians in their match against Congo.
Egypt will be even more determined to make amends in the upcoming match following their humbling defeat over two legs in the qualifying playoffs of the Brazil 2014 World Cup which saw Ghana record a strong 7-3 aggregate scoreline.
Former President Kufuor added that the short window available for players to assemble makes it difficult to develop chemistry.
“As individuals our team is as good as any you can find in the world.
“The challenge comes in when they are drawn together as a team because the players are drawn from various teams around the globe.
“When they come together for a short period it becomes difficult to hold them together.
“I am sure that we will still pull of a surprise,” he told Citi Sports at the sidelines of the official launch of the African Centre for Sports Studies at the Zenith University College.
