Gone are the days when Ghanaian football fans had high interest in the game and were willing to pay whatever the cost was in terms of money and time to watch Premier League games at the stadium.
Recently, the President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi shockingly and interestingly intimated that the GFA will from now on use all means possible to boost attendance at local league centers including the use of ‘sexy ladies’.
However, speaking in an interview with Top 103.1 FM’s Morning show ‘GHANA TE SEN’, former President of Ghana His Excellency John Agyekum Kufour told the host Nana Yaa Boamponsem Ameyaw that investing in the Local Players will help revive the Local League which is on the verge of Collapsing.
He questioned why players who move out of the Ghanaian league get better salaries there than what they receive at home, adding that, such move is gradually affecting the Local League.
“We have a big problem and we need to solve it now, otherwise the future of the Local League would be bleak’’ he stated.
Former President Kufour who was speaking to TOP 1031. FM on President Akufo-Addo’s birthday was of the view that “A lot of factors are involved here, so i don’t want to blame the players because they are working, but GFA and the people who are in charge of the Sports should invest in the industry to make it worthwhile. So in terms of money, our league is not attractive and we need to correct our mistakes. We can’t be losing players like that”, he said.
Records indicate that attendance at the various league centers has dropped sharply and abruptly over the past few years.
Additionally, a host of other factors has led to a strong dissipation of interest in the game from the Premier level right down to the Colts level thus forcing many football enthusiasts to conclude that interest in the game and for that matter fan base of Ghana football is in a state of deep crisis or headed in that direction if it is not there yet.
Surprisingly, there has been a huge uptick in support of the foreign leagues, a fast growing ‘staple’ for many soccer fans.
