A former national welterweight champion Isaac Aryee needs GH?14,000 to undergo surgery on a broken neck, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has disclosed.
Aryee was allegedly knocked down while riding a motorbike by a vehicle driven by one officer Aikins of the Mamprobi Police post last Wednesday afternoon on the Mortuary Road in Accra.
According to eyewitnesses, the police officer drove away without attending to the injured boxer who was in a critical condition, only for the boxer to be saved by a good Samaritan who rushed him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Aryee has since been on admission at the Accident Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he has regained his speech but he is unable to move his limbs without assistance.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the GBA, Naa Darkuah Dodoo, Aryee should have undergone surgery days ago but he has been unable to raise the funds needed to undergo the procedure.
“Former national welterweight champion, Isaac Aryee urgently needs GH?14,000 for the surgery. They have to transfer him to the surgical ward,” the statement said.
On Sunday (May 7, 2017), the boxer who has been bedridden by the accident was paid a visit by the former Minister of Youth and Sports and Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.
The Odododiodio MP during the visit said he was out of the country at the time of the incident but as soon as he arrived home, he decided to visit Aryee because not only does he hail from his constituency but he has a good reputation.
Mr Vanderpuye presented Aryee’s distraught wife with an undisclosed sum of money to cater for the boxer.
