Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah has charged sports’ journalists in the country to be critical of their reportages regarding the sector.
He bemoaned on the increasing interest by the journalists in focusing on foreign sports rather than the indigenous ones.
Speaking at the 42nd SWAG awards ceremony held at the State Banquet Hall in Accra, Mr. Asiamah admonished all sports journalists in the country to be an example in promoting the local leagues and sports by writing more stories around it.
“The worrying phenomenon is that SWAG seems to be more conversant with reporting foreign sporting news, especially the Premier League more than the local league,” he stated.
Mr. Asiamah also urged the members of Sports Writers Association of Ghana to broaden their scope to all the sporting disciplines and not be focused on only football.
“Even at the local front, the overemphasis is on football other than other sporting disciplines, this indeed must change. We must give equal attention and recognition to all the sporting disciplines. Sports is now used as a tool for development and that is the key role of sports, he added.
