The Deputy Captain of the Black Stars, Andre Dede Ayew, has equalled Asamoah Gyan’s record as the all-time top scorer for the Black Stars in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ayew scored the decisive penalty kick against DR Congo which ensured the Black Stars progression to the semi-final stage of the on-going African Cup of Nations last Sunday.
The West Ham attacker has now scored eight goals since making his debut in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 which was hosted by Ghana.
Gyan also attained this feat when he scored the only goal of the game in Ghana’s second game against Mali which secured the team’s place in the quarter-finals.
Both players have now surpassed the legendary Rev Osei Kofi who scored seven goals in two AFCON tournaments to become an all-time leading scorer. He held the record for almost three decades before Asamoah Gyan broke the record on January 21, 2017.
The Black Stars will play the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the semi-finals on Thursday in Franceville. As the team continues to progress in the tournament, both players have the chance to set new records if only they are able to get on the score sheet.
