Nigeria’s weightlifting gold medal hero 17 years old Chika Amalaha has been provisionally suspended from the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games after failing a doping test.
Chika who won gold on Friday in the women’s 53 kg weight division has tested positive for the diuretic amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide.
These two drugs which are both prohibited as diuretics and masking agents offer unfair advantages to athletes who seek to have a competitive edge over their opponents.
Amiloride and hydrochlorothiazise can be used by athletes to reduce their body weight so that they can make the weight threshold for the competitions they compete in. The drugs can also be use to mask the use of other banned drugs that confer upon their users an unfair advantage.
Although these drugs are banned in athletic competitions they are categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as necessary in a basic health system. They are often prescribed to hypertensive patients in the management of their condition.
According to BBC Sports, Chika Amalaha will however have her second sample, Sample B, tested today. Should the test results of Sample B corroborate the earlier test results, she would be stripped of her medal.
