Chicago Fire are looking to tie winger David Accam to a new deal, as the attacker is set to enter his last year with the club next season.
The Ghanaian joined the Men in Red from Swedish side Helsingborg in 2015, and his impressive performance has seen him win back-to-back Most Valuable Player of the Season accolades at the Major League Soccer outfit.
With 10 goals in 24 league appearances in his first season and nine goals in same number of matches in the recently-ended campaign, the 26-year-old has also laid hands on successive top scorer awards at the club.
“We engaged in discussions on a contract extension beginning in August,” Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said.
“His representative got married in September, so we decided to take a break and allow his representative to enjoy that. We then decided to push everything off until the end of the season.
“At the end of September when [Accam’s representative] returned from his wedding, we were still in the playoff hunt.
“In October, I didn’t want discussions to get in the way of David’s Fifa appointment where he went in early October and where he’ll be going in two weeks.
“I have scheduled to speak to his agent this week again. We’ll see where those discussions are.”
Accam, who has a goal in nine appearances for Ghana, also played for Ostersunds during his time in Sweden.
The forward recently revealed his desire to return to Europe, having come close to joining French side Nantes in the summer transfer window.
