Carl Lokko, head trainer of Ghanaian boxer Richard Commey believes funding supporter groups to cheer on Ghana’s boxers in international bouts will go a long way to in enhance their success rate.
The camp of the former Commonwealth Champion have spoken bitterly of how Commey’s last two bouts have been lost solely because the fights were staged away from Ghana.
The twenty nine year old lost to Robert Easter Jr in America and also to Denis Shafikov in Russia in the final quarter of 2016,ensuring that he missed out on the IBF Lightweight title.
Commey will however get another shot at a title when he comes up against Belgium’s Hedi Slimani in the WBC International Silver Lightweight title,this time on Ghanaian soil.
The veteran trainer believes the support of a home crowd is essential to the performance of a boxer and has urged the state to consider providing funds to groups like the Ghana Boxing Supporters Union whenever there are major international bouts for Ghanaian boxers.
“A home crowd for our bouts is what we are currently lacking,because they give you the motivatuion to go on and deliver.”
“We lack this especially when we travel outside to fight.”
“This is why we are happy that the people at the boxing fraternity have come out with a boxing supporters union.”
“This means that they are trying to unite to push the boys where ever they go. “The government must support this just like it does for football so we can stop complaining,he told Citisports at the launch of the Freedom Fight Night.”
