Former Hearts of Oak captain, Yaw Amankwah Mireku has advised the Black Stars players to play for free if they want to win the hearts of Ghanaians again.
Many football fans have lost their appetite for the national team after a shambolic display at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Ghanaians were hoping that the players will put up their best performance after an impressive performance in Germany and South Africa.
Since then, the team has struggled to catch the eye of Ghanaian football fans, despite the authorities changing match venues in a bid to attract numbers to the stadia.
The situation has not been helped by the ongoing rift between the Ghana Football Association and Minister for Sports Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.
Many fans believe the nation is wasting many through the payment of hefty bonuses to the players.
Amankwah Mireku, who won the CAF Champions League with Hearts in 2000, believes the payers should try forgoing their bonuses if they hope to rekindle the love of Ghanaians.
“If I am with the Black Stars, the only advice I can give to the players is that, we caused this hatred and it was through the huge amount of money that we were demanding and as at now we have not been able to win any trophy for the country so let’s all sacrifice to play the national team for free” he told Asempa FM.
“If you do this, you convince the whole country to support you because you are not in for the money and it will revive the support base again and it will be the same people that will call on the government and the FA to start paying the players but as at now the supporters have lost trust in the players.”
