Former Ghana captain Stephen ‘Tornado’ Appiah thinks the Black Stars have been performing below par under coach Avram Grant.
The Israeli led the team to claim silver at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, two months after coming on board.
However, a recent run of poor results, which include a 2-0 defeat to Egypt and a home draw against Sudan in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying, has sparked nationwide criticisms, with growing calls for the dismissal of the former Chelsea coach.
“I think the Black Stars have underperformed since Avram Grant took over from Kwesi Appiah in 2014. When you compare our era to the recent years, I think the team has lost its balance,” Appiah told Asempa FM.
“I just hope that things get right for the country very soon before the Afcon starts. They have to recover from their current poor form because it is clear that majority of Ghanaians are not happy with the team and much of it is because of Grant. He has gotten several things wrong as the head coach and must consider changing it,” he added.
Grant’s contract expires in February and he has reiterated his desire to see out the deal and wrap it up with the 2017 Afcon title.
However, should he even win the title, reports suggest that Ghana FA would not extend his stay due to his regular absence from the country.
Former Bangladesh coach Fabio Lopez has publicly expressed interest in the Black Stars job.
