Black Stars defender Harrison Afful says that the team has no advantage over Uganda and Egypt heading into the 2017 African Nations Cup despite their very recent meetings.
Both Egypt and Uganda are in the same group with Ghana in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and the Black Stars have faced them already in 2016.
Ghana drew goalless with Uganda in Tamale and lost 2-0 to Egypt in Cairo and this, according to some observers, gives Ghana some good knowledge before the start of the tournament.
However, Afful said in an interview with TV3’s Michael Oti Adjei at the Black Stars training camp in Al-Ain that familiarity rather would make the meetings with the teams more challenging for the Black Stars. “Playing against a team for two or three times is that easy.
It is like fighting an opponent in boxing. If you win the first bout, he will come prepared for the subsequent fight and so, we will have to get ready and defend very well.
It is true that we have played Uganda and Egypt a few times before the AFCON but we are still getting ready. The corrections (based on the previous matches) have been made and we are still working on them. We need to listen to the technical team and deliver on the day.”
Ghana will play against Uganda on January 17 in the Group D opener and Egypt on January 25. In between those matches, Ghana will face Mali on January 21.
