Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was outstanding for Schalke as they ended their losing streak and picked up their first win of the season as Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 in the Bundesliga.
Cameroon international Choupo-Moting opened the scoring with a penalty early in the second half in what was the first of Schalke’s three goals in six second-half minutes.
The other two goals came from Cameroon-born-Swiss international Breel Embolo, while Leon Goretzka added the third.
Embolo doubled Schalke’s lead in the 56th minute before wrapping up the triumph with a late fourth.
Ghana’s Abdul Rahman Baba came on in the final few minutes for Choupo-Moting who impressed after being the only change from the team that defeated Salzburg 3-1 in the Europa League in midweek as he took the place of Max Meyer in the starting lineup.
Baba was again dropped to the bench, with Markus Weinzeirl again opting for Sead Kolasinac at left back, with the Bosnian contributing the assist for Embolo’s first.
The coach will be hoping his internationals will stay away from injury during the international recess ahead of their next match against Augsburg after the break.
Baba and Choupo-Moting will make the long trips to Africa to represent Ghana and Cameroon respectively for the upcoming first round of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers.
Nabil Bentaleb, who featured in the heart of the park for Schalke, is suspended and will not travel to join Algeria as they meet Choupo-Moting’s Cameroon.
