Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe for the 11th time after defeating Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout in Milan. Ghana’s Thomas Partey made debut in the UEFA champions league in today’s match.
Real Madrid took the lead courtesy of Sergio Ramos. The goal came off a Toni Kroos free kick, which found Gareth Bale’s head. Bale flicked it on to Ramos, who barely got a touch to put the ball past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Ramos appeared to be offside when Bale headed the ball.
With the goal, Ramos became just the fifth player ever to score in two Champions League finals, joining Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Samuel Eto’o and Raúl. The goal, which stood as the lone score at halftime, sent Real Madrid fans watching at the Bernabeu in Madrid into a frenzy.
But in the 79th minute of the game, substitute Yannick Carrasco scored for Atletico off a low cross from Juanfran. After a scoreless extra time, the game went to penalties. After Juanfran hit the post on Atletico’s fourth attempt—both teams had made all of their previous kicks—Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to the spot with a chance to seal the title. Both teams had a number of chances to score a second goal.
Early in the second half, Antoine Griezmann’s penalty attempt smashed off the crossbar. Atletico was awarded the penalty after Fernando Torres was fouled by Pepe in the box.
