Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful says he was not surprised by Thursday’s defeat to Cameroon in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, emphasising the difficulty of the team to impress so far in the competition.
The Black Stars have won their matches with a goal margin and have struggled to contain their opponents at the back especially in the second-half. They conceded two goals against Cameroon with only eighteen minutes remaining following strikes from Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui and Christian Bassog.
“Surprised [that Ghana lost]? I wasn’t surprised because truth should be told. We have not performed well at the tournament,” Arhinful told Starr FM.
“We all know this our current team to be good but they haven’t performed well in this tournament so I wasn’t surprised with Cameroon winning at all.
“I would have been surprised if we had played very well against Cameroon and lost at the end. But to lose to them with this kind of performance shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone,” he added.
The Black Stars will have to wait for two more years before another attempt to end a 35-year run without a major title.
However, they will take on Burkina Faso on Saturday as the two countries seek to save their blushes with a third-place finish.
