Ghana Premier League leaders Aduana Stars have issued a statement to condemn allegations that sports journalists Felix Kwabena Romark and James Sowah were assaulted during their week five Premier League clash with Accra Hearts of Oak at the Nana Agyeman Badu I Park on Sunday but want SWAG to educate the media on how to conduct themselves at match venues.
In a statement signed by the CEO of the club Albert Commey, the Dormaa-based side claim the perpetrators of the barbaric act are not club officials, despite condemning the happenings.
The club also want the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to educate journalists on how to conduct themselves at match centers by adhering to the strict rules and regulations spelt out at the centers.
“We have learnt with shock the alleged manhandling of a journalist during the 5th week league match between ADUANA STARS FC AND HEARTS OF OAK on Sunday, 5th March at Domaa Ahenkro, Nana Agyemang Badu 1 Stadium.
“The management of ADUANA STARS FC wish to state categorically that we are unaware of such incident. We have also not sanctioned the beating of any journalist before, during and after the match,” the statement noted.
“We are, therefore, condemning any such act if it occurred at the blind side of officials of the club. As a responsible club, we are working with the GFA to get to the bottom of the case if it indeed occurred and the perpetrators brought to book.”
“We however wish to urge SWAG to advise its members to identify themselves properly and remain neutral at venues during league matches. They must stay away from restricted areas for sanity to prevail,” they added.
The statement added that the Dormaa Park has a solid record of being violent-free and that they are keen on maintaining that record.
“ADUANA STARS FC, for that matter Nana Agyemang Badu I Stadium has an unblemished record of journalist safety. Sheik Tophic Sienu of Ghanasoccernet did a survey on VIOLENCE AT OUR STADIA. Please read and you will see that Dormaa Ahenkro was not mentioned by any coach or captain of the various clubs,” the statement concluded.
