Ex-Black Stars captain, CK Akonnor, has attributed Ghana’s painful lost to Cameron in the 2017 Afcon semi-final match to tactical bankruptcy and wastefulness in front of goal.
“The opponent were tactically better than us. They did more than we did in terms of… when they have the ball and when they don’t have the ball; they know what to do at every given time,” he stated on Friday in an interview with Nii Arday Clegg on Morning Starr.
He added that: “The first 20 minutes they were [Cameroon] really on us because we opened up and they wouldn’t do that. They did the same with Senegal and it continued with us [Black Stars]. There were a lot of opportunities for them to kill the game in the early minutes.”
That notwithstanding, he said the Black Stars lifted their game after 20 minutes but were not clinical upfront.
Asked whether he thought the Black Stars could have won the game, he replied that “our chances were not clear compared to theirs [Cameroon]. Yes! we possessed the ball very well but where it matters most, which is goal scoring, we were not too clinical.”
The Indomitable Lions Thursday beat the Black Stars 2-0 to reach the final of the 2017 African Cup of Nations.
Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui put the Cameroonians ahead in second half after a mix up in the Black Stars’ defence – with Bassogog sealing victory after a counter attack.
