A group calling itself Zongo For NDC has rubbished New Patriotic Party’s manifesto promise to establish a Zongo Development Fund to improve the lives of people in Zongo communities when voted to form the next government.
The group described the idea as a decoy and an insult to the intelligence of people living in Zongo communities.
At a press conference in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region branch of Zongo For NDC said there is no need for a special fund for Zongo communities before development gets to them.
The policy, according to the group, is discriminatory and premised on bad intent because Zongo communities are found within cities, towns and villages, hence any development targeted at those areas should include Zongos.
Mohammed Awal Maswan, who is the spokesperson for the group, said Zongo communities do not need any special treatment at the expense of others but should be given a fair share of the national cake as the NDC is doing.
“Zongo communities should not be isolated for a special programme by any government. The distribution of the national cake should be fair for everybody to benefit, whether from Zongo or not.”
The group called on people of Zongo to reject the idea of voting for a candidate on the basis that he is a Muslim but rather renew the mandate of John Mahama to continue executing his developmental projects in all parts of the country.
