The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, has predicted tougher times for illegal immigrants in the United States under a Donald Trump presidency.
Many people around the world are quite apprehensive about the immigration and foreign policies of the billionaire and property developer who has not held any public office prior to his election as president Tuesday.
Interacting with journalists at the US Embassy in Accra Wednesday on the outcome of the US presidential election, Mr Jackson said he expects Mr Trump to take tough measures against illegal immigrants in the US.
“…On immigration, I expect that president elect will take a tougher attitude than we’ve seen from the current admin. What that will translate into I’m not sure, but I do think it’s going to be a crackdown on illegal aliens in the United States, but we’ll have to see how wide ranged that will be,” Mr Jackson said.
He however said he does foresee the US banning immigration.
“I don’t fear for a ban on immigration. One of the things that has made the US strong is its diversity. I think we’ll find a way to preserve that diversity and keep refugees and immigrants coming to our country but I think we may put more processes in place to ensure greater security” he said.
Touching on the country’s foreign policy, he said “people are apprehensive about foreign policy because we don’t have a clear idea what [the] president elect’s foreign policy will look like. It’s not been a prominent issue on the campaign with the exception of a few countries under discussion.
The breakfast interaction was attended by the media, members of the diplomatic corps, judiciary, clergy, politicians and the academia.
