The beauty of democracy is that each of us, however small, weak or eccentric, is entitled to his choice of candidate, however clueless or inhuman the candidate seems, or is deemed to be.
It is no news that Donald Trump is the latest president-elect of the United States of America.
Both Hillary Clinton and Trump were unpopular, but was Trump perhaps the lesser of the two evils?
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump remained the two dominant candidates in the 2016 US presidential race. The absence of a third potent force limited the choice of the US voter to the Democrat and Republican Party.
While many were not particularly enthused by Hillary and Donald, Americans had to choose between the lesser of the two evils, between the rock and the hard place, between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Perhaps, Trump was the lesser of the two evils: he managed to persuade enough voters in most states that he offered a fix.
Trump was touted to lose the election. He was seen as having extreme political views. He was the ultimate outsider against the ultimate insider. He was the protest candidate. Hillary merely represented the status quo.
Many voters may have seen Trump as racist and inexperienced, but perhaps he was the lesser evil compared to Clinton’s alleged untrustworthiness and corrupt nature.
As former First Lady and Secretary of State, Clinton had long been in the public eye and attacks by Republicans over the years resonated with voters.
Their most recent Clinton criticism focused on her use of a private email server while a Secretary of State and her refusal to release transcripts of paid speeches she gave to investment banks on Wall Street.
Many voters felt Clinton was out of touch with average Americans, did not share the same values with them, and always changed her position when it was politically convenient.
Hillary was leading most of the online polls, however, in the final days of the campaign, the reality for change set in and Trump walked the pathway to victory.
