Stakeholders in the Agricultural sector have welcomed the announcement of Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto as the minister designate for Food and Agriculture.
President-elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo two weeks ago announced Dr. Akoto as the person to be in charge of the Food and Agric Ministry under his government, which comes into force from January 7.
Some stakeholders in the sector have since lauded Dr Akoto’s appointment arguing he has the expertise for the job.
“Dr Afriyie is a specialist in agric who has the expertise, but the issues in the sector goes beyond just expertise. We need more a strong overall policy framework that will cause the change the sector desires,” General Secretary of the General Agric Workers Union (GAWU) Edward Kareweh said.
The Ghana Agriculture Chamber of Commerce also wants Mr Akoto to combine his experience with structural changes
Its President, Philip Abayori said: “Talking to him, you realize that he has passion about agric. He should put in place a lot restricting and shifting. If takes that into serious consideration”, he will excel, he stated.
