The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has expressed gratitude to the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) for allowing its flagbearer and founder to be part of the December 7 presidential elections.
Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom was one of the presidential aspirants disqualified on Monday, October 10 after the Commission detected errors with their nomination forms.
This resulted in a legal tussle between the PPP and the EC, which had to be adjudicated by the Supreme Court.
On Wednesday, November 9, Chair of the Commission Charlotte Osei cleared Dr Nduom, together with two other initially disqualified aspirants, to contest the elections.
Balloting for positions was consequently held same day with the PPP getting the fourth position between the country’s two major parties – National Democratic Congress (3) and New Patriotic Party (5).
Immediately after the exercise, Chairman of the PPP Nii Allotey Brew Hammond said: “We are very happy to be on the ballot,” describing the Commission as “accommodating”.
“We thank the EC for being understanding enough to get us amend and alter our nomination forms as per CI 94.”
He said the party’s position on the presidential ballot is a good omen especially given its symbol and slogan, ‘Awake!’.
“We are in between NPP and NDC and we hope that the average voter will recognize the sun and vote for the sun and vote for Papa Kwesi Nduom.”
