Parliamentary candidate of Progressive People’s Party (PPP) for Kwabre East Constituency in the Ashanti region has defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Grace Afram’s decision comes exactly seven days to the general elections on December 7, and on the heels of a massive defection of some PPP members in the region to the governing NDC recently.
According to her, she is running away from the PPP due to endemic corruption in the party.
“I don’t condone with people who are corrupt,” Grace Afram told TV3’s Evans Nkum on Wednesday.
The PPP, she said, claimed it is not a corrupt party and has always been crying foul about corruption in government; however, “corruption has its foundation in PPP”.
Grace who is a teacher by profession parried criticism that she has betrayed the PPP after all the investment put into her campaign and nomination.
“The PPP betrayed me first,” she defended her decision, adding that she cannot longer bear the mistreatment in the PPP.
She stated that president John Mahama has done a lot of things for the people in the Ashanti region citing the Kejetia interchange for instance, and called on all her supporters to vote for him.
Barely a week ago, about 120 members of the Progressive People’s Party including two executives in the Ashanti region defected to the NDC due to “incompetent leadership and dictatorship” within the PPP. But the party said those who defected were not known by the party.
