The National Peace Council and West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) with its other partners have deployed 750 accredited observers in prioritized risk areas based on hot spot mapping analysis across the 10 regions of Ghana to monitor the voting process.
The Council has set up an Election Situation Room (ESR) to monitor, report, analyze and facilitate responses to violent threats to the peaceful conduct of the 2016 general.
Addressing the media in Kumasi, a member of National Peace Council and chairman of Ashanti Regional Election Early Warning and Response Group (REEWARG), Reverend George Gyasi Adjei, said the Election Situation Room will also monitor and report on human rights abuses, voter corruption, hash tags and social media tracking, youth participation and compliance to electoral code of conduct at the polling stations.
“We want to assure all and sundry that the groups are committed to promoting strong democratic processes of elections to building good governance institutions and structures that encourage transparency and accountable systems in order to increase citizens participation during elections as part of civic responsibility and rights to vote to elect leaders to improve decision making process,” he said.
The group appreciated the work of the media in disseminating information to the public.
It, however, cautioned media owners, practitioners and personnel to be conscious of the responsibilities on them to closely interact with reporters to ensure fair and accurate reportage during the post elections.
The Election Situation Room is coordinated by the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP), National Peace Council (NPC), the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Transform Ghana and Blogging Ghana.
