President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, December 29 cut sod for the construction of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development at Somanya in the Eastern Region.
This comes in the wake of the approval by Parliament of a £45-million commercial agreement between the government of Ghana and Contractor Costruzioni of Italy.
Parliament had passed a law in October last year for the only university in the Region to be established.
It is one of the key manifesto promises of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama showered praise on “all those whose efforts and dedication has seen this project from the phase of conception to the present phase of construction”.
According to him, the conception was put into action way back in April 2013 when the National Task Force was inaugurated.
“The duty of the Task Force among others was to develop, organize and supervise the implementation of a programme for the establishment of the university that will focus on addressing the critical environment and sustainable development challenges of our dear nation Ghana.”
The Amoako-Nuamah Committee led the implementation of the report of the Benneh Committee.
