The President of the Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions, Madam Mercy Apoe, has appealed to government to provide funds for the completion of a GETFund project started in 2012 at Nangbagu Yapala M/A school in the Sagnarigu District of Northern Region.
Speaking to TV3 at the school as a concerned parent, she said the project was meant to provide adequate accommodation and boost enrolment and retention of pupils in the community but has been stalled.
The project, which is at a roofing level, according to her, has been left without any communication to the school as to when work will continue.
She said all follow-ups to the District Assembly have proved futile.
The project is engulfed in weeds.
Madam Apoe said primary school pupils currently use the head teacher’s office for lessons while Class Two and Class Three pupils are combined in one classroom just like Class Four and Class Five pupils.
TV3 saw that Kindergarten One and Two kids study under trees, making it difficult for them to be in school anytime it rains.
During the Harmattan season, Madam Apoe told TV3, they cannot cope with the weather under trees.
According to school authorities, it is a difficult task to teach two separate classes in one classroom, adding that the children have no concentration and sometimes teachers are compelled to teach in turns.
Madam Apoe, who is visually impaired, said she received complaints from the staff that there is no adequate furniture in the school, which has a total enrolment of 230 pupils. They also lack chalk.
She said the future of the children rest on effective education and made the appeal through TV3 for attention to be given to the school, saying that they are made to understand that school under trees have been eliminated but theirs is yet to benefit from the project.
The school was under the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly until the creation of the Sagnarigu District.
