The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah has put his campaign tour to the Ashanti Region on hold as a sign of respect to the late mother of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who is Otumfuo’s mother, died on Monday at the age of 111.
A statement issued by Manhyia Palace Thursday said the traditional One Week rites will be performed at Manhyia on Thursday, 24th November, 2016.
“In accordance with Asante custom, a ban has been placed on all funerals, drumming and noisemaking throughout Asanteman until after the funeral of the Asantehemaa,” the statement said.
The Chief of Staff acknowledged that the campaign could be noisy at times and would therefore not be appropriate at this period of mourning.
“To respect tradition, we decided to call off our campaign activity in the Ashanti region,” Mr. Julius Debrah told the media.
Mr Debrah is in the region to campaign for President John Dramani Mahama who is seeking re-election for another four-year term on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress.
