One person is reported dead at Chereponi in the Northern Region in what has been described as a bloody clash between supporters of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party Monday night.
Five others said to have sustained serious gunshot wounds, were initially sent to the Chereponi Hospital but have since been referred to a health facility in neighbour Togo for medical attention.
Several properties including stores belonging to some residents were set ablaze by the angry party supporters. Three wooden pavilions belonging to the NDC were also burnt. Chief Executive of Chereponi, Hajia Mary, who confirmed the incident to 3News, described it as “bloody”, and said it last for almost an hour but could not tell what triggered the violence.
She, however, said preliminary information gathered suggests the incident started at the market square at a time that supporters of the New Patriotic Party were returning from their final campaign rally.
According to her, some supporters of the National Democratic Congress began pelting the NPP supporters with stones when they got to the market square.
“The Police are there, they couldn’t control it so I called the army. Chereponi has less than 10 police officers so in times like these, we are handicapped”, she stated
