An 89th minute strike by New Zealand’s Tayla Christensen broke the deadlock as Ghana’s U-20 women’s team, the Black Princesses, lost their opening FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup match.
Played at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on Monday, the match saw the two sides seeking to lead Group C after France and USA drew goalless in the opening group game.
Ghana’s Sandra Owusu-Ansah came close to scoring after her long-range strike missed target only by inches.
That came following a surge by captain Wasila Diwura-Soale, who hit straight at the New Zealand goalie on a one-on-one situation.
The result sees the Oceanians move top of the group with a two-point lead. France and USA follow while Ghana languish bottom of the group.
Ghana’s next group game will be against France on Thursday.
