Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Mahama Ayariga has been declared as winner of the Bawku Central parliamentary elections.
He polled 22,611 votes to beat closest contender Gabiena Abugri of the New Patriotic Party.
The collation of results in the constituency had been rocked with controversy since Wednesday, December 7.
At a point, Madam Abugri walked out of the collation center.
Some of the ballot boxes did not arrive on time and two that did were said to have been tampered with.
As a result of the tensions, the constituency collation center was moved to the Upper East Region capital of Bolgatanga.
But after three days of collation at the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs secretariat, returning officer Shaibu Kareem declared the former Minister of Youth and Sports as winner.
In his victory message, Mr Ayariga expressed gratitude to “my mother” Madam Gabiena Abugri and the other candidates for a keen contest.
He lauded the people of Bawku for not making the headlines for the negative reasons during the elections.
“Even though it has taken us three good days to do the collation, the town has been very peaceful.”
