The General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union, Edward Karaweh has described Nana Akufo-Addo’s ‘one dam one village’ policy as a sign of underdevelopment.
In addition, he said the policy is likely to create chaos.
Mr. Karaweh was speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise Morning Show which was dedicated to labour on Thursday. The show transmitted live from the TUC Conference Hall in Accra brought together executives of some labour unions across the country to deliberate on their challenges.
Speaking about agricultural development, Mr. Karaweh insisted that the one dam one village policy is not the way to go.
“It’s a sign of underdevelopment. I do not see that as the way to go with agriculture development in this country. If you promise every man, one motor bike, there will be chaos. If you promise every man, one car, it will create chaos. There will be chaos in agriculture,” he explained.
“You see, what type of agriculture are you talking about? Are you saying everybody must be in agriculture? No, you are simply saying that if you are born in a particular village, because you have put the one dam there, you remain there and it will not be long, you will realize that that is not the aspirations of people”, he added.
“Of course people must have access to agriculture; the solution is not one village one dam. The solution is making water available”.
He cited the irrigation dam in the Tolon/Kumbungu district in the northern region which is serving several communities as an example of how it must be done.
