Polls have opened across Ghana as over 15 million eligible voters are expected to elect a president and 275 members of parliament to administer the West African nation that has been hailed for its democratic credentials.
The electorate have between 7:00am and 5:00pm to choose by a ballot, one of the seven presidential candidates who are seeking to govern the oil producing country.
Long queues began forming as early as 7:00pm Tuesday with voters expecting to cast their ballot early to proceed to their respective work places because the day was not declared as a public holiday.
Ghana’s Electoral Commission which has come under criticism and suffered several legal suits in the run up to today’s exercise has promised to deliver a credible, transparent and world-class elections ever.
7:28am – The positioning of voting screens has delayed voting at the Town Council Polling Centre in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region.
7:30am – Voting has just started at the Anyaa Sowutuom Apostle Sarfo polling station in Accra
7:53am – Voting is yet to start at Suraju’s Islamic School polling station at Ayawaso Central in Accra and the electorate are worried as to whether the wasted time added on to the stipulated closing time.
7:56 – There is confusion at the Dome Kwabenya Number 2 polling station as EC officials have asked voters to dissolve the already formed queue to form new ones since the polling station has been divided. The situation has hold up the start of polls in that station.
7:59am – Confusion at UC Primary polling station at Odumase in the Sunyani West of the Brong Ahafo Region. The confusion has been triggered by the decision of the Presiding Officer to start the exercise in the absence of security personnel.
