The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed utter shock and disappointment at the voter turnout in this year’s general elections.
According to the Chairperson of the commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, the voter turnout is 49% based on collated results from 210 constituencies out of 275.
A total of about 15,712,499 eligible voters were expected to participate in the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The 49% voter turnout is the lowest since Ghana returned to multi-party democracy when its first election was held in 1992.
“We are pretty disappointed at the turnout so far, based on the collated results from 210 constituencies. The provisional turnout for the election is about 49%. This is way below our history in elections,” Mrs. Charlotte Osei said in a short press briefing.
