If absolute power corrupts absolutely, the obsession to hold on to it even when the signs are clear that the governed are fed up and demand a change, can be greeted with weird and queer strategies.
The story trending today in the media is as worrying as it is unacceptable considering the depth of the backfired scheme to have the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) run down his party flag bearer, including an accusation that he wants to kill him after doling out an assortment of goodies including cash to him.
So diabolic a project it widens the chapter on what bad politicians can do to hang on to power.
When a government close to a general election can churn out so much money from the public kitty in a desperate bid to win the hearts of the electorate, the given country needs a cognitive overhaul.
In the past few days, the country has been plagued by a cacophonous tirade of ethnocentric accusations against the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
There was no doubt in our minds that a project had been kick-started in the few days to the election: character assassination of opponents by persons who profess to be Christians and Muslims and therefore God-fearing have been featuring largely.
We had expected such a series in the run-up to the general election given the level of desperation of the government.
The President had said recently that he is campaigning as though he is in opposition. We were not wrong in our estimation given how rough the past few weeks have been on the political terrain.
Not all persons, especially political personalities, when cornered can maintain their thinking caps without losing them. For some, engaging the services of others to cast slur on the integrity of others with whom they are contesting a political position is a fair practice. Under such circumstances even killing their fellow human beings is not an unusual thing to do if only that is an effective means to reach their political destinations.
The NPP press conference yesterday offered a rare insight into how the ruling party infiltrates the camp of its opponents to inflict maximum harm using state resources.
It gives credence to the allegation that some persons now outside the ambit of the NPP were lured with monetary baits to destroy the political grouping they have been associated with for many decades.
It is regrettable that persons who profess to cherish the development of democracy in a country which is not a one-party state would want to destroy its opponents without a shred of empathy.
We await the responses of those associated with the bribery scheme, their sole objective of having the receiver tarnish the image of the main opposition leader in the country, falling flat on its belly.
Now we understand why somebody has been busy accusing Nana Akufo-Addo of being a bigot; a charge which is incommensurate with the reality. We are unable to tell what material things he is waiting to pick for selling his conscience but know it is something substantial.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and those who stoop so low as to engage in such crude political tactics must remember their Maker to whom all mortals would one day return and render accounts of their sojourn on this ephemeral world.
Those who commit their battles into the hands of the Omniscient and Omnipotent God shall never be let down: not so however for the wicked whose passion for sowing evil as a passion and occupation, their punishment awaiting them on earth as well as in the Hereafter.
