Onaapo and Kalypo were the two catchphrase ingredients that caused the indigestion under the Umbrella.
First , we all saw how a mere photo aimed at taking a comical poke at the NPP flag bearer, now President elect Nana Akuffo Addo, actually taking a 360 degrees by rather making Kalypo the most sort after Beverage and the President elect the most popular candidate on the Ballot papers.
The NDC led government under the leadership of President Mahama, was engulfed at its realms by people who didn’t for one minute dream about being in such position of power after the demise of the late Honorable President Atta Mills , and an opposition party that was bent on discrediting the legitimacy of the government in power.
President John Dramani Mahama, was like a athlete with no tracks to run onto, and in trying hard to built or set up his own tracks or stadia to run in , people around him failed to provide him the right environment. The NDC economic policies and infrastructural developments failed the Ghanaian populace because NDC communicators were effectively busy with building/buying homes and cars. And to add salt to injury NDC branches around the world were all neglected by the government operatives , thereby making it also difficult for Ghanaians in the Diaspora to add their voice to the campaign. From the USA / Canada / UK / The Netherlands/ Germany / Spain / France / China , NDC members were doing everything possible to reach out to the Head Office so some thoughts/ideas/concerns etc can be exchanged /expressed but to no avail . Some would argue that as petty as this may seem , it could be a contributing factor to the loss because just as Party die-hards were busy fending off the lies and fake news that flourished on social media , they also needed to feel connected to the mother ship (NDC Headoffice).
Dec 7th 2016 was a day that Ghanaians spoke and the social fabric of our being as Ghanaians was tested to the core. The complacency and somewhat arrogance of some communicators made it impossible for the average Ghanaian to truly connect with NDC , and this translated in the votes where NDC assemblymen lost miserably because they thought building houses and buying posh cars with tinted glasses is what would retain them in power . Most Ghanaians who also did not see JJ Rawlings on the campaign trail because some argued he was too old and therefore we needed younger folks , left them feeling there was no need to go vote for NDC because to them Rawlings was the uniting factor to what their grievances were towards the NDC leadership /government.
With the dust settling, all the Kalypos and the Onaapos now have their eyes set on what the next governing Team and the new set of cultural arrogance they would inject into civil society.
NDC members and the Ghanaian community both home and abroad should commend President Mahama for showing graceful political maturity amidst all the hostilities that some NPP followers exhibited on Social Media .
Finally congratulations to the President Elect , as a patriotic Ghanaian it’s fair to say DONT YOU MESS UP because NDC won’t be happy cleaning up a lot of mess come 2020.
