Institutions can be defined as the recognized and reguarized processes through which a state performs its functions. They are in the form of norms, regulation, law etc. Proponents of this school of thought which we( Ghanaians) have subscribed to, are of the notion that for a society to progress and to guarantee individual freedoms, certain arrangement of law should be in place.
That there should be rules that must guide the behaviour and activities of people so that things are not done any how.
That rules enacted by the state should be well known and respected by all (ignorance of a rule will not count as an excuse).
Also, that it should be easy for the law to be enforced by law enforcement agencies.
Furthermore, they contended that rules should be internalized, meaning they must be allowed to operate so that they become the practice of the day.
The robbery attempt and the murder of the poor bullion van driver at Donkorkrom, should be seen as an act of occupational deviance(inability to conform to the norms of an occupation) on the part of the police suspects. This is because they have reneged in their sacred duty to protect society which they have swore to do. Besides, what will happen to the three suspects in the days, weeks, months or years to come would tell whether as a people we uphold institutions or not.
Moreso, the destruction of police and that of personnels properties and those left in the care of the former is an attack on the emblem of authority, stability of the state and a blot on the concept of rule of law.
In closing, we should learn as a people to resort to laid down procedures and processes in addressing issues that confront us. All powers have been arrogated to the state to be enforced on our behalf through laws etc. The Police as part of the coercive instrument of state should be spared with such unhealthy confrontations as such actions does not inure to anyones benefit.
