1. On Sunday, August 28, commencing at 11:56 a.m. (local time; 17:56 p.m., Sunday, August 28, Japan time) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister, who is visiting Nairobi, the Republic of Kenya, to attend the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), attended the Japan-Africa Business Conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
2. In his opening address, Prime Minister Abe explained that the Government of Japan will cooperate through public- and private-sector efforts to achieve further economic development in Africa, and emphasized that partnerships between Japanese and African private-sector companies will be promoted through the establishment of the “Japan and Africa Public-Private Economic Forum,” leading to investment in Africa by Japanese companies.
3. During the conference, a ceremony to commemorate a total of 73 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) being signed on the occasion of TICADVI between 22 Japanese companies and institutions and 20 African countries and 6 organizations was conducted in the presence of Prime Minister Abe, H. E. Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of Republic of Rwanda, S.E.M Rakotoarimanana Hery Martial Rajaonarimampianina, President of Republic of Madagascar.
This conference was held jointly by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest), under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, from 11:56 a.m. to 12:27 p.m. The main attendees at the ceremony were Prime Minister Abe, leaders of African countries, including H. E. Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of Republic of Rwanda, S.E.M Rakotoarimanana Hery Martial Rajaonarimampianina, President of Republic of Madagascar, and the representatives of 22 companies and institutions (Toyota Tsusho Corp., NEC Corp., JGC Corp., Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Sumitomo Corp., Marubeni Corp., Chiyoda Corp., Kansai Paint Co., Ltd., Nippon Yusen, Hokkaido University, Nagasaki University, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. (JOGMEC), Mitsubishi Corp., Sysmex Corp., Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Terumo Co., Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd., Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Mizuho Financial Group, Inc., and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI)).
