It is estimated that about 20% of Ghana’s total population comprises of persons with disability; making up the largest minority. Unfortunately, a greater percentage of these persons with disability constantly face all forms of discrimination, segregation, have limited access to employment, quality health care, education, etc. All these challenges coupled with the high cost of living, push most persons with disability below the poverty line; making them resort to doing menial jobs, begging on the streets and committing suicide in the worst-case scenario.
Prior to every national elections, political campaigns are at their zenith. During this period, most political aspirants make outlandish promises to win over the votes of Ghanaians; especially vulnerable groups such as persons with disability. How should the disability community respond to such promises? And what is the guarantee that these politicians will fulfill their promises after they are elected into power?
