I have known Winifred since 2014 when we completed SHS. She has always believed in me and really supported what I do as a creative writer. Interestingly, this amazing girl has suddenly changed something about my thinking. I previously pooh-poohed make-up and also disliked ladies who actually fancied it.
However, my good friend has now proven me wrong and even made me a believer in make-up artistry. There are thousands of make-up artists in Ghana, yet I strongly believe that Winifred — per her entrepreneurial dynamism — can possibly surpass the likes of Bobbi Brown in her field. She may not be the best in make-up artistry, but she is definitely golden in make-up artistry. Remember, she is a nursing undergraduate student who aspires to be “the nurse with the make-up brush,” as she keenly claims.
Alright, Winifred Efia Abugri, who is in her early twenties, is a nursing undergraduate student in UDS and a make-up entrepreneur. Winifred, an alumna of Mfantsiman Girls’ Secondary School, is an incredibly talented make-up artist who discovered her innate passion at the tender age of 7 when she used to steal her elder sister’s cosmetics to dress her dolls. She later began to master her craft by practising it on her own, reading a lot about cosmetology, and learning from make-up video tutorials.
Unfortunately, her parents influenced her to pursue a healthcare occupation, i.e. nursing, but she revealed that it has not killed her make-up dreams. Popularly known as Cleopatra, Winifred is striving to defy the odds with her professional skill regardless of what anybody thinks and does since that is what makes her personally fulfilled. So she, together with her likeminded friends, established a make-up firm called Glamsels GH.
Glamsels GH, which actually means “Glamorous Damsels Ghana,” is into cosmetology; they give counselling on and also perform make-up for people organising events such as weddings, parties, photoshoots, and the like. They aim at expanding their cosmetics business by employing beauticians to provide people with pedicure, waxing, piercing, tattooing, nail arts etc. Glamsels GH is poised to heavily influence cosmetology in Ghana, Africa and the world at large.
Their vision as a corporate entity is to be, in about 15 years time, a leading beauty therapy centre with branches worldwide offering the very best of beauty therapy to people all over the world. In essence they seek to build a cosmetics empire on a global scale. Besides, they are currently facing some sickening challenges like the popular misconception that make-up is downright ungodly. But Winifred remarked that, “If man didn’t improve upon God’s creation we would still be living in the stone age.”
Moreover, Efia whose role model is Nigerian vlogger and make-up artist, Toni Olaoye, is very determined to succeed with her make-up potential. She actually told me that her personal vision as a make-up entrepreneur was not to emerge affluent as most people think entrepreneurs should be. Winifred emphasised that she only dreams of becoming an accomplished beauty therapist who gives the best of service to all her clients.
In fact, her make-up passion which is actually her work has now become play for her since she enjoys doing it all the time without any regret. Miss Abugri is also advising Ghanaian ladies not to perceive make-up as the creation of a woman’s beauty but rather the enhancement of a woman’s beauty. She further advised them to apply moderate make-up, eat a balanced diet, and engage in appropriate exercise in order to grow healthier and more beautiful.
