Zanetor Calls for Unity in NDC Ahead of Presidential Primaries

The member of Parliament for the Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has called on members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to set aside their differences and unite for victory in the 2020 elections.
Addressing branch executives and supporters of the NDC from the Klottey Korle Constituency who had gathered at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall in their numbers to meet Former President John Dramani Mahama, the legislator underscored the importance of unity in their quest to wrest power from the ruling NPP. She asked, “if we say we want power in 2020, and we cannot unite in opposition, are we sure of what we want?” The crowd responded to this with a big, “NO.” She stressed on the need for all NDC members to have a shared vision.
She further added that though Ghanaians are experiencing unprecedented hardships under the current NPP administration led by president Nana Akufo-Addo, that cannot automatically translate into victory for the NDC. According to the MP, “even in a family, there will be disagreements, but if we cannot put our disagreements aside and unite, even though victory in 2020 should be easy for us, we are the ones who will cause our own downfall if we don’t unite.”
Dr. Zanetor Rawlings who is also the first daughter of former president and founder of the NDC, H. E. Jerry John Rawlings told the crowd that they must do away with the pattern of “skirt and blouse” voting, a situation where voters vote to elect an MP and a president respectively from different political parties within a particular Constituency. It will be recalled that the “skirt and blouse” phenomenon affected the then ruling NDC in several constituencies including the Klottey Korle Constituency leading to their eventual defeat in the 2016 presidential polls.
On the upcoming presidential primaries in the NDC, she advised all the various interest groups to exercise decorum as they campaign for their candidates. The MP for Klottey Korle stressed that they must conduct themselves with the highest level of civility so as not to cause irreparable damage to the fortunes of the biggest opposition party in Ghana. She said they must keep their eyes on the goal, which is a massive victory for the NDC in 2020 to return to power to rescue Ghanaians from the current hardships they are experiencing.
Speaking in a charismatic fashion much akin to her father who is noted to be a charismatic leader, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings who has endeared herself to Ghanaians with her interactivity with her constituents and for engaging in decorous issue-based politics seemed to have struck a chord with the party supporters who kept chanting “very true, very true” throughout her address.
Several bigwigs of the NDC both at the national and regional level, including former chief of staff, Julius Debrah were present at the gathering. Former president John Dramani Mahama was in the Klottey Korle Constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region to canvass for votes to be elected the flag bearer of the NDC. The former president is among 10 candidates who are all vying to lead the NDC into the 2020 general elections.
